Math in Focus
This year our school began a new math program-Math in Focus. Math in Focus is the U.S. version of the successful Singapore Approach. Math in Focus teaches the traditional skills in a way that emphasizes understanding and various methods for approaching a problem. Students learn both the how AND why math works.

Bar ModelingBar Modeling is a model method used to organize information in a word problem. The use of models has been found to improve problem solving. Math in Focus is a new program for our students, because of this students do not have background knowledge about bar modeling from second grade. Third grade students begin using bar models in chapter five with addition and subtraction. We are currently introducing skills from second grade before beginning the chapter. The video shows how a part-whole bar model is used to solve a word problem (the calculations at the end involve a mental math method that is not specific to bar modeling).
